I checked a 6 panel taillight housing from an '84 this A.M. and it had a hole for the lower middle pane but was not notched to accept the bulb holder. That pane did transmit light but not as much as the others. I don't know what any of this signifies except maybe that Volvo didn't intend for that pane to be used as anything other than a reflector, or at least not in U.S. market cars.
I would think that if the picture in Bentley is correct and some configurations actually do have a bulb in that position it's not going to be a brake light. Not with a 5 watt bulb.
