I'm not an expert on electrical systems, so I'll assume you're right, but then add this return - the Bentley (pg 350-3) clearly shows the following layout, looking at the back of the driver-side brake light assembly:

top row (all three lights) plus bottom right (i.e. outside) light with the following values: 21 W BA15S OR 21/5 W BAY15d

bottom row left and center : 5 W BA15S

My question centers around this issue: there is a hole there, and the PCB appears to power that location. However, since there are no notches, it would seem that its not a normal use item. Was the this location used in an earlier version of this car (say before 1981)? Is it intended from some special application (i.e. some sort of European/Australian requirement)?

Finally, I'll ask - would a 5 watt bulb generate (sorry, no pun intended) the same concern on your part, about overheating/shorting?

Thanks for the time on this - and to answer your question, yeah, LA demands maximum exposure. I've been hit twice in the last three weeks. It's why I drive a brick - but I love my little brick, and want to protect it (and by extension, my wife and child) as much as possible.
