Removing solenoid will help relieve any fluid pressure remaining.
Place tranny in 4th. Start with turning the OD output flange clockwise as you stand behind the unit and pull as you turn the flange.
Progress to tapping (banging) with a wood mallet ( short length of 2x4) just forward of the flange right about where the number 54 is on the 700-900 FAQ diagram. Sometimes a small helper ( six to eight years) is great because they can't hit too hard, do so kinda randomly and allows you to turn the flange almost continuously as it it hit.
After ten or so hits, pull back on the flange as the hitting continues. Pull hard with a warning. Brace yourself so if it pops loose you will not embarrass (or hurt) yourself. Have a good grip or rig a loop of rope around something above you so the unit will not fall to the floor as it comes of and you end up rearward. Happend to me once!
Added pressure to the rearward pull can be wiggling to the side or up down.
The first style Sprag bearings tend to stay locked to the race more so that the later improved Styles.
Also the cam for driving the pump loves to hang up. The wiggling helps walk that out.
Driving wedges. Very carefully, and watch where you put the pressure. The case has very thin walls above the solenoid and between the bolts. If you do get a gap, work very slowly and ONLY at the bolt flanges. Tap the rear as above every so often.
Then again, today you may go out, grab it and have it come off without a problem. Had that happen also.
