Thankfully, my OD came off last night without a hitch. I followed Duane's instructions and rotated the transmission over in 4th with the occasional tug. After about 5 minutes of this I heard a little gurgle from the OD and some more fluid dumped on the bench. Then with a bit of 2x4 and a 2 lb hammer I whacked it a couple of times on the output flange and then on the intermediate casing where it is proud of the OD. It moved. A couple more good whacks. It moved again. Then after the studs went into the OD case - it came off!!
I didn't try the pulling trick as I had nothing to attach the transmission to, without resorting to rope, bailer wire and duct tape (not that I'm against these essential items). As soon as I saw it wiggle, I figured it would go, and to be honest, tapping it appart while it is all on a bench seemed pretty safe.
Thanks to all for your advice...let the rebuild begin.
