I bet when the car ran hot, the upper hose was still cold. Probably a bubble. as mentioned, run the car until you know the Thermostat should be open..watch the gauge... then garb the upper hose and squeeze it hard and fast a few times. you should feel the hose getting hot and then the Gauge should start coming back to the Normal reading.
