The book and the others are correct - there is no timing adjustment on these cars.
However, if the timing advance is WAY off, and it might be retarded a lot, you could have a failed knock sensor. This is a black sensor with a small (10mm) bolt through it, into the engine block just below the head.
They cost about $65 from FCP Groton (www.fcpgroton.com).
Also consider that your harmonic balancer could have slipped. Does the mark move at all while holding the throttle at a constant speed, like 3000 rpm? If so, the rubber in the pulley could have separated.
