I ditched the idea of doing the cable replacement after reading how to.
Might be in the FAQ or I may have seen it in Haynes (don't shoot me).
I successfully resurrected a very sticky and stiff cable by working it a bit manually and then rigging a funnel arrangement to encourage tranny fluid to seep down into the cable as a good and safe lubricant.
If the cable is sticky in the sheath, even if very sticky, this method can work, and I'll rewrite what I did. If it's busted off at the lower end and thus the cable moves without working anything at the lower end, then I think you're in for replacement.
