To clarify...

If you put the key in and turn to the right, then return to vertical, the trunk is unlocked.

Key in, turn to the left, return to vertical, it's locked.

However, if you put the key in, turn to left, then just remove it, you've taken the trunk lock off the central locking system and it's locked. In my experience, not many volvo people seem to know this trick.
