No, the tach does not drop to zero. It drops less than 1K RPM's. Though the misfire appears to be quite regular, the engine never tries to die.
I have ordered an OEM coil since I am suspect of the generic I installed. Though this seems to be a stretch, the problem didn't start until after the OEM quit and I replaced it with the generic. If I understand the general idea of how the coil works within the ignition system, the fact that under load and at higher RPM's I cannot detect a misfire fits. Less demand on the secondary of the coil at higher RPM's.
I'll post with the results after I install the coil tomorrow.
