Dave;

Phil is correct of course on the first point...instrument lighting is in parallel and on the (normally) dimmed bus...you were deceived by seeing two wires going to most lamps...this is not a series connection, but a "daisy chain"...see the clock at the right (69)...it has only one wire...that's because, as Phil also mentioned, the grounds are picked up mechanically at the individual sockets.

Phil; And I agree on your second point also, although my lamp seems to have retained decent brightness over the years...
