That's not true. If you do all of the prep work yourself - and you should - and find a shop that will just lay down a coat or two of good paint, then do all of the finsihing work yourself I think a paint job rivaling the factory could be had for hundreds rather than thousands. The knowledge you'd acquire from the job would then allow you to better maintain the paint as well.
Throwing money at something makes it go faster and accomodates a lot of ignorance and laziness, but it's not always the best way. Why do "good" paintjobs cost so much? Because of the countless hours of prep and finishing - labor and knowledge cost LOTS of money. I'm quite confident with Dad's old sprayer and a gallon or two of good paint I could put a paint job on that restoration snobs would think cost me $5,000.
That being said, I'm guessing you don't want a professional restoration, just something that looks good. "Looks good" can be done at Maaco. Do all the prep work - STUDY the task and the methods - have it sprayed, do some finishing over top the quick and dirty job that Maaco will do.
