Sean's right about the alternator. It will make a world of difference, bolt right on, and should be reasonably priced.
I picked up a 55a bosch unit from a B20 powered 245 at a local junkyard for $10.00. I think it had bad windings, because even NOS brushes couldn't bring it back. I picked up a "fits 1975 245 Volvo" new unit on eBay for $80.00. I had to add some washers to get the pulley to line up, but it has worked flawlessly ever since - providing all the power I've ever needed. Fixing the main connector on the fuebox and using some dialectric grease made my old amp light glow all but vanish. New relays for the turn signals and hazards have made those quite bright as well.
I have crane electronic ignition on my distributor installed by the original owner and purchased from IPD. It has never failed me. I think you have to be more picky if your fuel delivery is going to be injected. That system was grafted into the original coil. I've since switched in the blue bosch coil from my donor 1800E. Which also works fine.
