wagon tailgate supports behavior - bug or feature? 700 1990

Dear all,

on my 740 wagon, the tailgate supports look reasonably new but behave weird. In warm climate, there are no problems... but in just a bit colder climate (SoCal winter) they are really hard to fix at the opened tailgate position. Even fixed, the taigate would sometimes start falling down silently, hitting the head! I guess these supports are gas-operated.

My question is: are these supports behave like that already new?
Or I better change them?
