thanks for the input to you and other people!

...so when you unlock it, the tailgate just goes up itself half-way?? wow.
Mine are so bad that the tailgate would just stay down. $15 is probably a good price for the old original support tailgate struts, but an aftermarket new one you can find for $13 or so each. IPD sells them more expensive, probably a better brand. Have to figure out, and still not sure which to buy.
