Joel,

When I found this condition in my 1800ES some years back (after it had sat in storage for about 5 years), I used lacquer thinner to flush the tank. It seemed to cut the rusty sludge very well. I found only some minor pitting in the bottom of the tank after cleaning, so I left well enough alone. Four years later, so far, so good.
