Think about that for a second. Honda sells cars in the largest market in the world, and still manages to sell fewer cars than Peugeot/Citroen. And, by the largest market, I suspect you mean the United States, as Peugeots are available in Mexico. Hell, you can buy Nissan branded Renaults quite readily in the U.S. today (the Quest/Espace and Versa/Tiida/Clio).
While I'm sure that French arrogance and the quality of French labour in the 80s killed any hopes of getting properly French branded vehicles in the US, typical anti-French sentiment in the United States has played an equal role.
