Yes the spigot bearings and the length of the input shaft is the same as far as I remember. The M4 is pretty much identical in size to an M40, they are hard to tell apart at a glance. The transmission tunnel will also take a 4 speed, if the car was originally 3 speed. Its the overdrive that won't fit in the tunnel, regardless of the age of the car.
