The bracket is much less of a problem than you would think.
There are only two factors you need to accommodate: first, the bracket must be long enough to allow adjustment of the alternator. If you have a bracket which fits the alternator but doesn't allow use of the stock belt, simply take a measurement and buy a shorter (or longer) belt.
The second, and far more important factor is getting the alternator pulley to line up with the water pump pulley. I'm sure you'd have no trouble putting a slight dog-leg bend in the bracket to get the pulleys aligned.
The next concern is the bottom fitment, where the alternator pivots. That will certainly take a little more work to get it in the proper location so the pulleys line up.
I agree that the one-wire GM alternator is the way to go. You should be able to pick up a rebuilt one for around $20.00.
