If you're driving 90 miles a day, it sounds like you're probably commuting a ways.
I would maybe rethink a volvo as a commuter car.

My first point- if you're driving 90 miles (assumer 45 each way) you're going to drive fast- like 70-85. That's really the biggest problem. The square body shape is stylin' if you ask me, but not very good for mileage. All the square corners cause a lot of drag.
If it's an auto, I would kill for that mileage. I get 22 max (or I did before it turned cold).

I would say that 1) he lied a bit 2) you and the PO drive way differently in terms of accceleration and top speed.
