I did the same swap on my 88 (non-turbo) and get about the same mileage, in spite of having a permanently mounted roof rack. Didn't lower it, but did install a Turbo exhaust system. Having the belly pan in place under the engine helps aerodynamics. I use 10W30 in winter, 15W40 the rest of the time, both conventional oil. I usually run 32-35 in the tires.
