Check your clutch adjustment first.
Of the half dozen or so gearboxes I've opened up with that symptom, I've always found the syncros ok but the layshaft bearings failed which led to the layshaft spindle and layshaft itself to self-destruct.
In any case, if the clutch adjustment makes no difference, try to get in the gearbox to find out what's wrong before other parts get ruined. Gearbox parts are getting harder to find and expensive as well.
