Yep, that's what I was thinking, Smitty - that the fluid pressure was too low to transmit power - but I couldn't account for the problem clearing up any other way.
I guess I'm still in need of an education on what's behind the engine - I've never seen the insides of this stuff and have only very basic ideas of what's going on back there.
It would be neat to see if the Myth Busters could push start an automatic but I can't bear to see them destroy yet another easily restored classic car!
