Trouble with 122 automatic 120-130

Hey, I've got an auto 1966 122s, but I have a few problems. The linkage connecting the shifter lever to the tranny seems to be too loose, and makes it very difficult to shift. I find that if I grab the linking rod under the dash and push it towards the firewall I can shift quite smoothly with the other hand.

I went under the hood to try to follow the instructions my repair manual gave about adjusting the length of the main linking rod, but the rod length had already been adjusted as far as it could go. The rod had a bunch of teeth running down it and the additional linkage was clamped right where the teeth ended.

The rest of the linkage under the hood is pretty loose, I wonder if anyone knows of a way to fix this issue.
