Volvo considers the small diameter spring an "update". You will have to replace both the upper retainer and the lower spring seat. Your 79 has upper retainers, and a lower spring seat appropriate to the early style large diameter spring. I would just use the original diameter springs and be done with it. They are inexpensive.
Spring heights are correct using the stock components. A few thou either way makes no difference.
