The late temp sensors have two wires. It's a bit awkward to remove, but make sure you release the security catch before wiggling and pulling - as Steve said the plastic will be brittle by now.
My 940 gauge would climb to nearly normal reading, then start jumping back and forth between zero and halfway, then fall to zero and stay there. A check of the sender showed resistance climbing from about 2000ohms dead cold to around 200 fully warmed up. No problem there. I removed the cluster to check things over - no apparent loose connections, but I tightened down the screws holding the gauges (fuel and temp) to the board. They receive their electrical signals through those screws. Reinstalled and everything has been working perfectly for two yrs now. Potential free fix - tighten screws.
