If not the source of the problem, it doesn't help things. The service reminder worm gear is effectively out of the picture when its return spring is removed, but those mushy plastic gears still fall apart. The problem extends to other brand cars with speedometers made by VDO in that era. Read Jeff's website for some of the best research.
