thanks for reassuring what i assumed... sometimes i forget that i'm dealing with a volvo not some chincy little thing.

i guess the plan for now will be to get some floorboards and crossmembers from swedish treasures and maybe do that one of these days in the summer when it's decent out. and thanks for the pointer on other rust-prone areas, i'm going to go take a look right now!
