122 trailer hitch

I note the article you cite is from 1962. Both of my 66 220 wagons have
what I would call a "frame mounted hitch" which is quite a bit more robust than
the one shown. I believe the tongue to which the ball is mounted is about
2½ x 3/4" steel, and although it is bolted to the bottom of the bumper I think
that is mainly to eliminate chafing and vibration between the bumper and the
trailer hitch. It is mounted to what amount to frame rails in the rear.
BTW it will do a great job on your shin if you don't watch it!
