544 Igntion Problem 444-544

Hello,

If you want to make the engine run and drive the car fairly easily you will need a good used 12 volt coil, preferably a coil that is designed to be run by points as opposed to a coil for electronic ignitions, and a couple of jumper wires.

I like to ziptie the good used coil to the side of the coil mounted on the car.

Remove the small wire from the coil on the car that comes from the distributor and connect it with a jumper wire or directly with a nut to the "-", negative post of the good used coil.

Then connect one end of a 2nd jumper to the one of the running light wires located at the inboard side of the fusebox which should be the wires connected to the 3rd fuse from the top and the wires should be white and connect it to the "+" positive side of the coil.

Move the large coil wire from the center of the old coil to the good used extra coil.

If your starter button works all the time, with the key on or key off, you just simply pull the headlight switch to the first position to bring on the running lights and now powering the good used exta coil and push your starter button. And when you get the car running, you can then shut the car off just by turning off the headlights.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE: ALL ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES LIKE THE BRAKE LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS AND CHARGING SYSTEM WILL NOT WORK WHEN THE CAR IS HOT WIRED IN THIS FASHION!!

If you starter button does not work, you will need to jump the starter which is pretty easy to do, BUT IF YOU DO JUMP THE STARTER AND ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE BY YOURSELF, PLEASE MAKE SURE THE PARKING BRAKE IS ON AND THE CAR IS OUT OF GEAR.

BTW, the proper way to remove the ignition tumbler requires that a working key be available because the tumbler has to be turned to the "On" position before the little pin on the backside of the dash can be depressed so that you can pull the tumbler out. Without a working key, your only option is to drill. And you drill to take out the spring that holds the pin, but be careful not to drill too deep or you will damage the electrical part of the ignition switch. Having the replacement tumbler handy helps a lot, but with the tumbler removed, a slotted screwdriver is all that is required to turn the switch, but even this can be damaged as the slotted washer is soft and if you use too small of a screwdriver blade you can damage it or break it.
