Sounds exactly like the connector to the frequency valve on my 81. The valve is located in front of the intake bellows right behind the post that supports the manifold. Per Bentley, "The Lambda-sond system provides precise electronic control of the air/fuel mixture." Check 253-7 for a more complete description. Your car sounds like it doesn't have this system.
