DRINKS OIL PRETTY QUICK 140-160

Good advice, however, a funky temp gauge can also be caused by a malfunctioning instrument panel voltage regulator. If this is the case, the gas gauge will be acting strangely too.

What weight oil are you using? Should be 10W30 in the winter, if it gets cold where you are, and 15W40 or 20W50 the rest of the year if the engine has a fair number of miles on it. Synthetic is not necessary, and may be more prone to leaking out through the seals.
