I too avoided electrical problems most of my life simply due to ignorance. Staring with something simple, having good information and going slow has mitigated a good deal of fear of electrons. Classic Volvos, Ron's Swem site and getting old was just the ticket for me :-) I've found that cleaning terminals is simply a part of regular maintenance. Corrosion visible at the battery terminals is going on at a smaller scale wherever exposed wiring connections are made.
