Everything I've seen puts the drivetrain loss on a typical ITB 142 at 25-30 hp.

That sounds right -- I was thinking 35 with the M41 tranny, not M40. Per Schroeder at Classic Motorsports magazine says converting to OD cost their 142 project car about 8 HP.
