I would be surprised if a faulty fuelpump relay would be that consistant- as in never starting on the first attempt but always starting on the second.

Having said that... how old is your fuelpump relay?

You did not mention what year your car is. When I contacted my dealer concerning a check valve for our 91 745t I was told it was not equipped with one. What year is yours?
