Based on my experience, I'd be highly suspicious of the connector. If the light is dim then simply wiggling the connector will often restore full brightness. Pull the connector off and inspect for signs of corrosion or loose connectors in a deformed socket. The next best suspect would be the nearby ground connection rail on the chassis.
