As others have mentioned, you may or may not have a heater core problem.

I tried to fire you off an advance copy of the revised heater core diagnosis and replacement procedure article that is destined for the 700-900 FAQ. Unfortunately the e-mail address in your profile bounces probably because it is out of date.

The original FAQ article was more 700 oriented. The newer one is much improved and includes first hand experience with a 940 system. The revised article should be more appropriate for 960/S90/V90 systems. The Volvo green manual for your model and year would of course provide even more specific details.
