It's most likely your kickdown cable. It won't kick into passing gear which is why you noticed the lack of acceleration. The stiff gas pedal means the cable may be binding. You can disconnect the kickdown cable at the engine and then use the little pushbutton on the gear shifter to prove that the car still has acceleration ability.
