Update:
The main problem was a seized fan clutch. The car had low-end torque but once the engine started getting up in the RPMs, the hp required to move the air robbed the vehicle of any power.
It's still a bit anemic so I am going to look closer at the kick-down cable (initially cleaning up the throttle helped but it's still not 100%).
I am also going to do a complete "tune" just-in-case. It's supposed to be up-to-spec and the records indicate that it is; but they didn't use the same parts as I have over the years. Any opinion here on brands/etc. For a non-turbo is there any reason to spring for iridium (denso) plugs? In general, I use the Bosch. I figured new filters, new plugs, new wires as a good phase-0; other suggestions?
Anyone have any experience with the turbo-exhaust upgrade that IPD sells? I started thinking that way when I noticed that the exhaust pipes are slightly (very slightly) smaller than my other '93! No, there isn't any obstruction; but I am thinking that the shop that maintained this car did not opt for the premium parts.
Once the engine is more spry, it's off to IPD and suspension improvements. Well, maybe after the winter after I take of the studded snows. :-)
