Speedometer discrepancy 200 1986

Last night when driving home, I was driving next to a new Honda Civic and noticed the digital speedometer increasing in speed as we both left the light together. Once we got to the same speed his read 47 mph, mine read 50 mph. How could mine be reading that high and why? How does that effect my total miles. Once I clocked a stretch of one mile at 60 seconds between mile markers and it seemed correct.

Thanks.
