The sharp corners inside the oil trap cause pressure differences which makes the oil globules form and condense, if its only cleaned out enough to pass air it loses effectiveness, it just becomes a hose.

Some oil will still drop out and form in the trap due to velocity differences caused by the volume of the trap but I think its cheap insurance to just swap em out.

I get oil in my bellows too.
