Bentley Step 6 is wrong 200

Okay, Referencing step #6 in the Bentley manual. For some reason I'm seriously missing something here. Let me describe exactly what I've done and have tried to do. First, I removed the #1 spark plug from the cylinder. Then I reinstalled the plugwire onto that plug (note: the other end of the plug wire is still connected to the distributor cap). I then laid it on top of the valve cover and used an alligator clip test lead to ground it from the bent portion of the plug to a ground on the engine thus grounding the plug. I then removed the harness plug from my Bosch type distributor. Then I turned on the ignition and using a test lead I jumpered the B and C terminals in the harness connector according to fig. 15 in the book and repeatedly installed them and removed them. I am not getting any spark. Now my question is how can I get any kind of spark when there is no power to any of the spark plugs when that connector is disconnected from the distributor? Isn't that where the plugs all get their power? Please help me out here. I'm at a total loss.
