This time I didn't have the heart to torque the new bolts to the final torque of 130 degrees of rotation after 44 ft lbs.

That is a torque to yield specification. The clamping force is achieved by an engineered amount of bolt stretch. That is why you could not reuse the bolts; they have been stretched and therefore cannot be torqued to the same value as before they were torqued. After a few heat cycles you must retighten those bolts. This time torque to the specified 130 degrees after 44ft/lbs. I would. But then, I am not the one who has had to remove 3 broken bolts. ;-)
