To elminate the mercury. The level switch used in the trunk and under the hood both use mercury.

Works fines but the problem is that when the car gets recycled/crushed the mercury gets released. The switch on a 1993 240 classic is a different design without the mercury. If I have some bad or not needed switches I bring them to the eco collection centers for proper recycling.

It adds a nice convience but is hardly a must have feature.
