Welcome to the Brickboard with your first post! The most likely cause of the ODO failure, especially if it happened after you hit the trip odometer button (while the car was moving), is the odometer gear. It is a very common failure for it to toss a tooth and jamb up after nearly 20 years. A new one can be had for a reasonable price here: http://www.odometergears.com/volvo.html
Please note, the above is the most common ODO failure cause, but not the only! Sometimes it is necessary to re solder all joints on the ODO board, other times IC or motor failure requires a board replacement (very rare).
