insanity has set in -- third brake bleed did not work 700

No need to be confused or surprised. Changing the caliper was the indirect cause. When a new caliper is installed it is normal to have to bleed, air anywhere in the system will cause a low spongy pedal. You would have a caliper full of air after it's installed. If the bleeding was not done correctly you will still be left with some air.
