Even if the ignition timing is fine on # 1 cylinder, ( and it should be checked as Paul recommends ) it does not mean that it is
the same on all of them. With worn distributors the timing interval between the cylinders can change so that one or more cylinders are advanced or retarded as compared to the cylinder that is used to set the timing and can cause overheating.
Another possibility is a problem with the coolant tube that runs the length of the head. These are often loose, rusted to the point that there are holes where there should not be, or cracked.
