Tachometer-Pegged 1800 1972

After being stored for way too long, the battery was dead. I used a cable jump to start the car, without problem, but the battery was so low that the car did not run well. I noticed the tachometer was reading very high revs although the actual rpm was only around 2000 (by ear). Regardless, I took off for a "jerky" drive to recharge the battery. I then noticed that the tachometer was fully pegged to the limit, and the glass seemed hazy, as in condensation or smoke. Now, although the battery is charged sufficient to start and run the car, the tachometer is fixed in the "pegged" position. Is this a Boo-Boo (or Boo Hoo!)?
Thoughts? Remedy? Thanks.
