...from the symptoms of smoke residue on the back of the meter glass, it sure sounds like something went south in the instrument...quite possibly an electrolytic capacitor...they can dry up and explode on next application of voltage...but they would also be fairly simple to replace (by an electronics qualified person ). ...if you're up to it: Remove, dissassemble carefully, inspect, report back what you find...we'll try to help.
