The series resistor (in this case 0.1 Ohm), is used to measure a voltage drop that is directly proportional to the current being drawn by the pump. This approach allows for measuring current without having a clamp-on amp meter. To do the conversion to current, from the voltage across the series 0.1 Ohm resistor, it is simply the voltage across the resistor divided by the resistance (Ohm's law).
