Assuming that this is a TURBO like my 90 .... I ran into a problem where the car intermittently shut itself off while driving down the highway ... turned out that the "Power something" in the drivers side front fender had a bad connection in the gang plug going into it's harness. One of the connectors had worked its way loose and the engine would shut down as if someone shut off the key. Most times I could coerce it into starting again and it would run perfectly ..until the next time. It finally quit completely .... thankfully in the yard of my Volvo Guru... it took him 3 full days to track down and fix the problem. You might want to give that a check too although your problem sounds more fuel pump related.
